References - An Overview
spacer

References are vital in helping you form a judgement about whether to trust a Pet Sitter Swap member to look after your pet(s).

So Pet Sitter Swap asks all members to nominate two referees to vouch for their suitability, reliability and trustworthiness as pet sitters.

Reference details can be seen only by members who have also nominated referees.

In addition to providing a score on trustworthiness and reliabilty a completed reference also contains an overall recommendation on suitability to look after other people's pets.

This recommendation counts towards a member's profile rating.

On-line References

When you nominate a referee Pet Sitter Swap will contact him/her with instructions on how (s)he can visit the site to complete an on-line reference. (The whole process takes about two minutes to complete.)

Referees are asked to vouch for your suitability, reliability and trustworthiness as a pet sitter. There is also an option to add a short comment.

Who Can Be A Referee?
Any responsible person aged 18, or older, not related to the member being vouched for, and who can give an honest and impartial account of a member's suitability, reliability and trustworthiness as a pet sitter.

Who Can't Be A Referee?
Partners
Relatives
People who live at the same address

In other words ... anyone who cannot credibly claim to be an impartial and objective assessor of a member's suitability, reliability and trustworthiness as a pet sitter (for example because his/her relationship to that member).

Am I Obliged To Provide Referee Details?

No, you do not have to supply referee details. But you then won't be able to access other members' references.

What Info Is A Referee Expected To give?
The following information will normally be provided:
  • Referee's name.
  • Referee's address.
  • Relationship to you (eg colleague, friend, neighbour, vet).
  • For how long (s)he has known you.
  • Whether the referee owns or has owned pets.
  • An objective opinion on your suitability, reliability and trustworthiness as a pet sitter.
  • Any additional comments (optional).

Who Can See Details About My Referees?
Only members who themselves have provided referees, and who live within your search range.

What penalties exist for giving an inaccurate or misleading a reference?
If a member or referee deliberately gives misleading or inaccurate information then this will result in a permanent negative recommendation.

A negative reference recommendation, (denoted by a red flag , as opposed to a green one) is likely to have serious consequences as it will dissuade members from requesting a pet sitter swap.

It will also impact on a member's profile rating.

Can a member delete a negative or unfavourable reference?
No.

What's the difference between a referee and an on-line reference?
A 'referee' means that Pet Sitter Swap displays a referee's name and address details (to members who themselves have offered referees).

An 'on-line reference' means that Pet Sitter Swap displays a referee's name and address details, together with a filled out reference.
